Amitabha is a celestial buddha in the scriptures of the Mahayana school of Buddhism. Ammitabha is the primary buddha in the Pure Land sect of Buddhism, practiced mainly in East Asia. According to the Mahayana scriptures, Amitabha possesses infinite merits resulting from good deeds carried out in past lives as a bodhisattva named Dharmakara. 'Buddha Amitabha' is simply translatable as 'Fully Conscious Infinite Light'.
Amitabha was a monk named Dharmakara in ancient times (and possibly in another realm), according to the Larger Sutra of Immeasurable Life. In some versions of the sutra, Dharmakara was a former king who, after coming into contact with Buddhist teachings through buddha Lokesvararaja, renounced his throne. Dharmakara resolved to become a buddha possessed of many perfections. He expressed these resolutions in 48 vows, which set out the buddha-field that Dharmakara aspired to create, the conditions under which beings were born into his buddhaksetra outside of space and time, and what type of beings they would become after their rebirth.
